Nutrition Services participates in the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs. These federally assisted meal programs are designed to provide access to nutritious meals for students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade. The breakfast, lunch and afterschool snack programs allow parents the opportunity to provide their students with nutritious and balanced meals at affordable prices. These programs enhance student learning and make positive contributions to their physical and mental well-being. Studies have shown that students whose nutritional needs are being met have fewer attendance and discipline problems and are more attentive in class.

Student meals are planned to meet applicable Dietary Guidelines for Americans, including:

  • School breakfast meals must provide 1/4 of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for key nutrients
  • School lunch meals must provide 1/3 of the RDA for key nutrients
  • No more than 30% of calories from fat and less than 10% of calories from saturated fat
  • No artificial trans fats
  • No deep fat fried foods
